FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY!!

Portland's Secret Staircases

Taken April 13, 2024

One of the side effects Portland’s amazing geology is that we have a lot of steep hills. Seriously, Portland has a mountain range and an extinct volcano within its city limits. A curious result are the numerous public staircases spread throughout the city, pragmatically tucked into both fancy residential neighborhoods and functional commercial districts. Documented in books and local news, these examples of public infrastructure show off the best in urban design, landscaping, stonework, city planning, and community connectivity.

Plus, they make for a good walk.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!
