FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Amargosa, NV
The stubbornness of art and commerce in the Nevada desert.
Taken January 16, 2025
Near the California/Nevada border, at a tangle of highways called Death Valley Junction, a few crumbling buildings rest in the sun. Once a company mining town, the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel still apparently conducts business to this day. Where workers once sought shelter from the heat and attended church services, a dancer named Marta Beckett took over the ruins and held performances for years. Today, you can occasionally still catch a show, or simply walk around, observing how the caked mud mirrors the peeling paint, while honest-to-God tumbleweeds jostle across the highway.

About “Five Picture Friday”
Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!
Want a print?
For those desperate for some wall decor or simply infatuated with one of my photos, prints are now available for a nominal fee - basically ‘at cost’. Send me an email with your request, and I’ll make it happen.
