FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Canyon

The Big Thompson River begins in the high country of Rocky Mountain National Park, snaking through the mountain town of Estes Park. But then, it slams into the foothills on its eastward progression. Seeking release, the river carves a spectacular canyon into the jagged schist and gneiss, dropping altitude rapidly. Today’s Colorado Highway 34 follows the Thompson’s meandering course, creating a glorious drive and a testament to the stubbornness and ambition of local road engineers.
