FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Doors of Durham

Portals and passages in a medieval village.

Taken October 16, 2025

In Northern England, the city of Durham flaunts an impossibly quaint scene. A college town with a medieval center, bricked streets and stone walls channel pedestrian traffic through the city core, set on a peninsular cliff above the River Wear. In the shadow of a 1,000 year old Cathedral, modern life proceeds - pizza parlors and bookstores thriving within the ancient architecture. And everywhere you turn, painted doors frame life, drawing the eye and inviting curiosity as to what dramas are unfolding inside.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!

Want a print?

For those desperate for some wall decor or simply infatuated with one of my photos, prints are now available for a nominal fee - basically ‘at cost’. Send me an email with your request, and I’ll make it happen.
