FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Fort Davis

A historic calvary outpost in the west Texas desert.

Taken February 15, 2025

The Davis Mountains are a peculiar formation in the high desert of west Texas. Rising out of the Chihuahuan landscape, a small alpine plateau is ringed by volcanic rock formations and grasslands. There, set among the peaks lies the Fort Davis National Historic Site, a onetime regional base for the U.S. Calvary. Active during the ‘Indian Wars’ of the late 19th century, today you can explore the ruined barracks, officers quarters, and stables…and experience tangible history and the ghosts of tragedy.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!

Want a print?

For those desperate for some wall decor or simply infatuated with one of my photos, prints are now available for a nominal fee - basically ‘at cost’. Send me an email with your request, and I’ll make it happen.
