FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Ghost Town

Among the ruins of a Colorado mining boom town.

Taken July 30, 2025

Along a rocky road north of Silverton, Colorado, the remains of Animas Forks slowly decay in the San Juan Mountains. At an altitude of over 11,000 feet, the remaining wood and stone buildings valiantly try to resist the harsh climate, briefly visited each summer with wildflowers and jeep tourists. From the 1870’s to the early 20th century as many as 450 people called Animas Forks home. But the mines played out and the climate took its toll, leaving only memories and a few shacks in the spectacular wilderness.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!

Want a print?

For those desperate for some wall decor or simply infatuated with one of my photos, prints are now available for a nominal fee - basically ‘at cost’. Send me an email with your request, and I’ll make it happen.
