FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Grapevine Hills

Isolation and grandeur in the depths of Big Bend.

Taken February 16, 2025

Adrift in the middle of Big Bend National Park, the Grapevine Hills are a rocky outcrop bisected by a small valley. You can hike down the valley, admiring the contorted geology and jumbled boulders, interspersed with all forms of cactus trying to scratch out a living. It’s a surprisingly peaceful place, away from the main tourist stops and more popular vistas. It’s just sky, stone, and sunlight…and the quiet crunch of dirt under your feet as you weave through the yucca plants and ocotillo.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!

No, seriously. Who do you think you are ? Selfish bastard…
