FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - Terlingua

Quirky charms of a West Texas desert hideaway.

Taken February 18, 2025

Being over 140 miles from the nearest Interstate, you have to work hard to arrive in Terlingua, TX. Known mostly from a Jerry Jeff Walker album and an intermittent Chili Cookoff, Terlingua sits just outside Big Bend National Park among scrubby thorns and a chalky, rock strewn creek. Populated by ruins and rusting vehicles, a cemetery, various homes and art galleries, and surprisingly decent restaurants and coffee shops, Terlingua has long been a getaway from any sense of normalcy, especially in buttoned-up Texas.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!
