FIVE PICTURE FRIDAY! - California Gulch

High altitude glory in the Colorado San Juans.

Taken July 30, 2025

The San Juan Mountains present an alpine wonderland tucked in the corner of Southwest Colorado. There, some of the highest peaks in the United States and thousands of miles of wilderness await the intrepid. Towns like Durango, Telluride, and Ouray provide base camps for exploration and wonder. Rising west of the ghost town of Animas Forks, California Gulch draws visitors higher and higher along dusty roads and flower strewn meadows…briefly luminescent in the short summer, before the snows return.

About “Five Picture Friday”

Every other Friday, I produce a short photo-essay on an interesting location. I try to capture the essence of the place, distilled down into a few images. It’s a fun way to practice my photography, and I hope you enjoy a little armchair travel!

Want a print?

For those desperate for some wall decor or simply infatuated with one of my photos, prints are now available for a nominal fee - basically ‘at cost’. Send me an email with your request, and I’ll make it happen.
